The Chicago Industrial Market

Scale, Diversity and Opportunity Like No Other

As the centrally located singular hub of the nation’s highway, railroad, and airfreight systems, Chicago is the epicenter of North American transportation, manufacturing, warehousing and logistics.

With over 9.8 million persons, the nation’s 3rd largest MSA, and a workforce of over 4.6 million, Chicago is the largest U.S. manufacturing center with over $72 billion in annual production output, the global leader in options, futures and derivatives exchanges and host to more trade shows, conventions and corporate meetings than any city in the world.

Servicing over 100 million passengers per year and moving over 1.7 million metric tons of air cargo amongst the two major airports, Chicago offers more than 3,000 daily flights to over 200 cities worldwide.

For over 100 years, Chicago has remained the nation’s busiest rail hub with the six Class-One railroads moving 500 freight trains and 37,000 rail cars on any given day. Touching 25% of the nation’s rail freight traffic and 46% of the intermodal traffic, Chicago’s intermodal yards handled over 16 million TEU’s in 2016 alone.

When it comes to freight, inbound or outbound, first mile or last mile, raw materials or finished goods, whether by air, rail, or truck, all trade lanes lead to “The City That Works” and it’s 1.35 billion square feet of manufacturing, warehousing, distribution and terminal facilities.
